The Council is pleased to sponsor both the Social Enterprise and Young Business Person of the Year awards.
Our programme of investment in jobs and growth continues apace. At Littlecombe in Dursley – the county’s largest regeneration site – we are starting work on a new £1.7m business park extension offering 20,000 sq ft of flexible workspace. At Brimscombe Port, £3m of infrastructure works will pave the way for new homes and businesses, with the Homes and Communities Agency part funding this work.
This year will see the completion of the Stonehouse-Stroud stretch of waterway – a project that has attracted over £100m of private investment in 500 homes, created 700 jobs and 57 new business start ups. Our £18m programme to build 243 homes for rent and shared ownership has been praised by nationally and tenants alike. Jobs in construction, transport and local services have all benefited as have local companies. We have won national awards for our canal regeneration and council house building programmes.
Other projects benefiting the local economy are a new £1.7m extension to the ever popular Dursley swimming pool. The new Dursley ‘Pulse’ centre opens in July and will offer dance, fitness and leisure centre facilities. Our new depot at Gossington is taking shape and will be the base for new refuse and recycling services that start in November.
Along with the University of Gloucestershire and SGS College, we run the largest and best careers advice event for Year 9 students in Gloucestershire. The Stroud Ambitions event also provides evening sessions on further and higher education options for school leavers and parents.
We are the first council in Gloucestershire to have a work experience charter. Welcomed by companies and community employers, it guarantees quality standards for student placements. We also run a successful apprenticeship programme with some of our 10 apprentices spending time at small companies.
Chief Executive David Hagg said: “I have been judging these awards since they started and I’m always impressed by the innovation, drive and success of so many entrants. It’s great that we can celebrate their achievements through the Stroud Life Business Awards.
We aim to deliver high quality, value for money services and we are delighted that the business community’s satisfaction with the Council is at an all time high.”
