South Gloucestershire & Stroud College has recently adopted a group structure to manage the expanding organisations associated with the college. Development of the Gloucestershire Science and Technology Park at Berkeley will accommodate the college’s engineering provision from this September and a University Technical College from September 2017. The UTC will specialise in advanced engineering and manufacturing and cyber security and is a joint venture with the University of Gloucestershire. Other developments within the group include a Multi Academy Trust and the group is the advanced stages of an application for a Free School in South Gloucestershire to support young people with autism from ages 4 to 18.
Apprenticeship provision continues to grow at SGS College, with over 1300 apprentices per year and both overall and timely success rates well ahead of national averages. Expanding areas for apprenticeships include Construction and engineering, Information Technology and more specialist apprenticeships such as Procurement and Supporting Teaching and Learning.
SGS College is in a collaboration with Gloucestershire College, Cirencester College and the University of Gloucestershire to promote Higher Apprenticeships across Gloucestershire and to help employers to access this increasingly important area of work-based Higher Education.
SGS College offers Apprenticeships, including Higher Apprenticeships, within the Bristol, Stroud, South Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire areas in the following sectors:
- Team Leading, Management and HR Management
- Business Administration, Business Professional, Business Innovation and Growth
- Sales, Marketing and Social Media, Customer Service and Retail
- IT Professional, IT User and Web Design, including cyber pathway
- Construction Trades, Plumbing and Electrical
- Accountancy (AAT), Procurement, Supply Chain Management
- Health & Social Care, Care Leadership and Management, Youth-work, Early Years and Children and Young Peoples Workforce
- Education and Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
Much of the growth is attributable to long term partnerships with key employers, such as CF Roberts and NKS. The college also delivers apprenticeships for public sector organisations, such as Stroud Council and South Gloucestershire Council and the Ministry of Defence, large multinationals, such as Boeing, and equally important, local employers in all sectors.
SGS College offers a very successful recruitment service for employers considering taking on an apprentice. There is a talent-pool of apprenticeship-ready students on traineeships, there are over 4000 college students, and through the work with the Schools careers services and external partnerships the Vacancy Matching staff are perfectly placed to find the right individual, not only to fit the job role but to fit the team. In 2014-15 SGS College filled 87% of the apprenticeship vacancies they advertised.
