Michelmores LLP, the Exeter-based Top 100 law firm, was named ‘Law Firm of the year (11+ Partners)’ at the Devon and Somerset Law Society’s (DASLS) inaugural awards ceremony at Sandy Park on Thursday 3 March.
Michelmores is a firm with a rich history in the South West. Founded in 1887 by an entrepreneurial and energetic young lawyer, Henry W Michelmore, the firm’s first home was a small office in Exeter’s Cathedral Yard. It was there that the foundations of the firm were built, expanding its service lines they offered, growing its client list and developing its widely-held reputation for excellence.
In 2005, Michelmores moved to a purpose-built 50,000 square foot premises in Pynes Hill, Exeter – and in the same year, opened an office in London. Then in 2012 Michelmores opened a Bristol office, which has since tripled the size of its team.
2015 saw Michelmores continue to develop on its successes, first and foremost it marked the firm’s fourth consecutive year of growth, with revenue increasing by 15% from £26.2m to £30.1m. Over the last five years, the firm has experienced an outstanding period of growth –since 2011 turnover has increased by an average of 10%.
The Firm also recently supported the launch of Yang Tze Law in 2015, the UK’s first wholly Chinese-owned law firm. Michelmores’ Managing Partner Malcolm Dickinson was appointed as its CEO (in addition to his role at Michelmores) working alongside the Chinese management team. Supported by this, Michelmores has increased its international activity over the last 12 months, which now accounts for approximately 15% of total revenue.
Malcolm Dickinson, Managing Partner at Michelmores said:
“Michelmores is an ambitious firm and over the last year we have seen continued growth both in the South West and nationally. During 2015 we launched a number of new strategic initiatives – both client-facing and internally, including Ambition 2020, our strategic vision for the next five years.”
“This award recognises the hard work and commitment of everyone at Michelmores as well as our commitment to our work in the South west – we are delighted to have won ‘Law Firm of the Year.”
Louise Edwards, Marketing Director at Michelmores said:
“The competition for this award was high and we were up against a truly talented group of law firms in the South West, including Browne Jacobson, Foot Anstey, Porter Dodson and Wollen Michelmore.”
“The DASLS awards provided a great opportunity to highlight and celebrate the successes of law firms of all sizes in the South West and I was so pleased to have been a part of it. It was a fantastically well organised and fun event, and we look forward to supporting the awards again next year.”
